St. Peter's Basilica
St. Peter's Basilica (Italian : San Pietro in Vaticano ) is a major Catholic basilica in Vatican City , surrounded by Rome . The building is described as the largest church ever built ( it covers an area of 23,000 m² and has a capacity of more than 60,000 ) and one of the holiest sites in Christianity . Construction of the basilica began in 1506 and was completed in 1626 .
St. Peter's Basilica was built on the orders of the first Christian Emperor Constantine I , in the year 326 in the place where St. Peter was martyred . One thousand three hundred years later the building started to collapse slowly , and therefore the Pope Nicholas V ordered that built a new basilica . But the new construction began in 1506 on the tenure of Pope Julius II . Construction of the basilica took 120 years . Michelangelo's pieta requested donations of his work to his very famous. At that time he was 72 years old . The basilica is the largest basilica in the world with a length of 193 meters and 132 meters high .
Tradition says that this building is the place where St. Peter , one of Jesus' apostles and is considered the first pope , was crucified and buried . This church is the burial place of St. Peter under the main altar . Other whales are also buried in the basilica .
