The origin of the Vatican Museums can be traced through a marble statue purchased 500 years ago . Statue of Laocoon ( the name of a religious leader ) who according to Greek mythology , tried to convince the people of ancient Troy not to accept the " gift " of a hollow horse sculpture from the Greeks , who was discovered on January 14, 1506 in a vineyard near the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome . Pope Julius II sent Giuliano da Sangallo and Michelangelo Buonarroti who were working at the Vatican to investigate the discovery. Based on their recommendation , the pope immediately purchased the sculpture from the vineyard owner . Pope Statue of Laocoon and showing off his sons in the grips of a sea serpent to the public at the Vatican exactly one month since the discovery of the statue.
Vatican Museum celebrates the 500th anniversary of her in October 2006 by opening an excavation site underground cemetery on Vatican Hill to the public permanently .
